Review: Domaine Bousquet Cameleon 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2022 Chardonnay

In the last three years, we have managed to tour almost the entire portfolio of offerings from Argentina’s Domaine Bousquet. Still, somehow, we have not had the pleasure to enjoy the vineyard’s Cameleon label. What differentiates Cameleon from any of the other lines? As best as I can determine: the sandy soils in this particular vineyard in the Uco Valley, the constant breezes from the Andes help mitigate heat stress, and groundwater from Andes snow melts. In other words: terroir. As always, Bousquet places a premium on being square in the center of quality and affordability, and these are no exceptions.

2021 Domaine Bousquet Cameleon Organic Cabernet Sauvignon – 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Malbec, and somewhat surprisingly, that 15% stays quietly in the background and does a minimal amount of lifting. Quite approachable and full of bright raspberry on the nose, a bit of time in the glass allows for a mild note of milk chocolate to cut through. The red fruit is met by cassis, licorice and baking spice on the palate. Bright acidity carries the fruit to a finish full of roasted plum and anise. Mild tannins keep the focus squarely on the fruit, but it’s not particularly jammy in its delivery. An engaging, affordable bottle that will do well with an easygoing weeknight pasta dinner. A- / $20

2022 Domaine Bousquet Cameleon Organic Chardonnay – Bright notes of peach and lemon run throughout, with a pinch of lime and pineapple in the mix. A touch of praline and creamy vanilla gradually builds on the palate but eventually fades as the finish provides a clean conclusion where lemon zest and lime end things on a lively note. B+ / $15
