Review: Wyoming Whiskey Single Barrel Bourbon 2023

We were a little behind on our review of the 2022 single barrel release from Wyoming Whiskey. OK, a lot behind. And, as you can see, we haven’t been any more punctual with the 2023 edition. So much whiskey, so little time to taste it all. Amirite?

For Wyoming Whiskey’s 2023 single barrel release the story remains unchanged. This is a single barrel of their flagship wheated bourbon drawn from the very finest 1% of stocks. Each bottle label denotes the specific barrel ID, in case that’s important to you.

Wyoming Whiskey’s single barrels are consistently some of the best whiskey coming out of this pioneering distillery, and the 2023 offering is no exception. The aroma is initially quite nutty with crunchy peanut butter and pecan pie, but eventually things give way to creamy butterscotch and warm, honey-drizzled cornbread. A lacing of musty rickhouse notes, a note I often get with this distillery, adds an earthy edge as it opens, but the depth of sweeter, richer aromas carries the day. The palate is round and honeyed with a mild, peppery warmth that extends evenly across the sip. Notes of Cracker Jacks and pralines showcase nuts and brown sugar in equal measure before a bit of coconut cream pie and a lift of candied orange peel arrive on the midpalate. The finish is soothing with barrel char, mild baking spice, and chewy caramels. Another winner.

96 proof.
